GPT Waste support Stockport Homes teambuilding day at Reuben’s Retreat charity

GPT Waste have recently supported our client, Stockport Homes (SH), on a team building exercise with a difference.

Reuben's Retreat

Every year SH have a staff away day for team building – previously they have been paintballing, taken part in Segway experience days etc – this year, the team donated their time to a charity in Glossop called Reuben’s Retreat.

Reuben’s Retreat was started in memory of 23-month old Reuben who was on a family holiday in the South West when he took a fall. Following various test at the local A&E however, he was transferred via air ambulance to a Neurological Unit at another hospital. Here it was confirmed he had suffered an ATRT which is Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour, it is a very rare and aggressive form of Cancerous tumour, only 4 to 5 children will be diagnosed with this tumour in the UK per year and there are very few symptoms.

Reuben passed away soon after diagnosis, however, despite the devastating news his inspirational parents set up the Reuben’s Retreat Charity just several days after Reuben’s passing and it has grown from strength to strength since then – via social media and local fundraising they his parents raised £1m in less than two years.

The plan is to have a retreat in the north west countryside for children with life limiting and life-threatening illnesses, with a bereavement support and counselling centre for parents and siblings, hence they have purchased a former hospital in Glossop that dates to the 1800s. You can see more information about the retreat here.

In Partnership with Circle Liverpool, GPT provided a Free of Charge skip to support the event whilst SH cleared out garden areas of the property on their teambuilding day. SH also assisted with some handy work including painting and decorating internally.

In a thank you email from the Reuben’s Retreat team they said:

“We just wanted to say a huge thank you for donating the skip that Stockport Homes used for their volunteering day at Reuben’s Retreat.  As you know, their team did an incredible amount of work and saved us thousands of pounds in costs – enabling us to use that money to go towards renovating our Retreat building and to supporting families with children with life threatening illnesses or families bereaved of a child.”

Steve Leonard, Head of Assets and Development at Stockport Homes, said:

“I would like to personally thank you for your kind support you recently offered to the Assets & Development team (SHG) for their team day away. The day was a complete success and the contribution you offered made suck a difference to the ultimate outcome. We believe the overall impact of works provided would be in the region of £10,000.00 and this made a huge difference to this very worthy charity.”

Charity’s such as Reuben’s Retreat cannot manage without the support from other organisations and volunteers. If you would like to find out more about their mission, visit their website here:

GPT Waste would like to thank Stockport Homes for the opportunity to help them make their teambuilding day a success and wish Reuben’s Retreat all the best for the future, the team will make sure to keep checking in on their continued success.
